Highgate Ostrich Farm

There are a few open farms near Oudtshoorn but this one is our favourite.

The big feature at Highgate is that it has everything - a history of the ostrich trade, animals at different ages, close up interaction with the eggs and chicks, feeding, production methods, examples of ostrich leather and feather based items, and so on. It really is an ostrich A to Z, with great guides. There is (of course) a shop and a restaurant too. Just 15 minutes from Oudtshoorn, Highgate gives a great insight into this once massive industry. When you see the street traders back in town it will all make a lot more sense after a visit.
