Kirstenbosch Gardens

These large gardens were created over a hundred years ago with the intention of preserving the unique flora of South Africa.
Covering 1300 acres, the area was once an overgrown mix of orchards, weeds and invasive species, populated by wild pigs. The ambitious task of clearing it was taken on by botanist Henry Pearson who did so on a limited budget.
Today glasshouses contain a wide range of South African plants whilst the outside areas feature the huge array of Cape species.
Within the gardens visitors can enjoy great views and even get into the tree canopy for a while using the boomslang walkway. In addition a number of walking routes lead from the gardens, including the Skeleton Gorge route up table Mountain.
